A lot of families choose to use cloth diapers to save money. When I started researching cloth diapers with my first baby, my spouse was still in college, and we were not able to spend $300-$500 on a stash of cloth diapers. Luckily it is pretty easy to cloth diaper your baby for around $100-$150.
Here are some ways to cloth diaper your baby on a budget:
Flannel receiving blankets- These can be used as flat diapers and can usually be found for very cheap or even free. Ask family and friends if they have some laying around that they are not using anymore, or ask in local Facebook groups.
Flour sack towel- I love using flour sack towels as inserts for pocket diapers, I simply pad fold them and place them in my diapers. They are super easy to clean and dry fast. You can also use flour sack towels as flats. When my little ones were older and sleeping through the night I would put a hemp insert in the middle of the FST and it would keep them dry all night. Once your baby is older you can pad fold FST and lay them in your covers.
Buy diapers secondhand. There are tons of Buy/sell/trade groups on Facebook, just make sure you ask for pictures of the inside of the diapers and how they have been cared for.
If you know how to sew you can easily sew preflats from fabric you find on sale or even use old cotton shirts. You can also make covers out of wool sweaters.
My favorite cloth diapering system for $100
24 pack of flour sack towels-$36.99
3 pack of snappis-$9.95
4 Bells Bumz covers- $39.60 (for newborns you may want a few more covers)
2 Thirsties hemp inserts I have used these inserts for all my kids, the set I have left has lasted me through 3 kids- $12.20
As your baby grows you may find that you will need to add extra inserts or boosters, but the system above is a great way to get started and lots of families use flour sack towels throughout their entire cloth diaper journey. Cloth diapering does not have to be expensive, a lot of families around the world use items they found around their homes. How do you cloth
